Nowadays, every "concerned" citizen of the world shouts: give more financial aid to the needy!
The targets are the wealthiest people on Earth, and of course the governments.
Altough the great majority of the governments running so caalled developed nations, already contributes a sizeable chunk of their GDP, it's never enough.
The most prominent "do gooders" want countries such as the US, to double their contribution. But, they seem to forget, that there are many social problems that America faces today, and to solve them, requires more... money. Why would you then divert aid funds abroad, instead of helping your own citizens?
Another aspects, often overlooked, is that money given to poor countries are usually appropriated by the ruling elites, with very little reaching those who need to be helped most. Experience teaches that even when there's a net benefit to the poorest, it doesn't serve any long-term goal. The population usually explodes, with more poverty ensuing.
Before any financial or material aid are given, the grantor should do whatever possible to ensure that it gets to those who need it, and more importantly, it'll be used for a lasting relief, rather than some temporary measures. Only then, when the improvement is visible, charitable organizations soliciting help, will enjoy better effects of their campaigns.
