Often with foundation grants, the objectives and goals of the foundation are very specific and targeted. For this reason they are very strict on the type of paperwork that is filed and kept for the duration of the project to show how the funds were used.

However, there are not typically as many people applying for foundation grants and the competition for the free money is less than with other types of financing programs. The qualifications and pre-requisites to even apply for specific funding programs is traditionally less strict than other grants such as government ones. For these reasons, people often find that applying for foundation grants enables them to receive free money for research and other financial needs that they may not have qualified for with other types of financial options.

As long as you spend all of the money according to the guidelines and requirements that you agreed to when you receive the award money, you do not have to pay the money back to the foundations. The money is literally free money that you can use for your project needs. If however there is some money left over, most foundations require that it be returned to the foundation’s funds in order that others can benefit from the financing program. The benefits of foundation grants are tremendous and well worth the time to make a full application.
