Do You Have To Repay Grants Money?

When you receive free grants money, do you will ever have to repay them?
My understanding is that no. That's what free money are. But, apparently there are quite severe conditions written in the grants approval letter, that lay a heavy responsibility on part of the grant recepient. If even the smallest fault happens, the grantor can recall the funds.

If the above is really true, and the best way to find out is to talk to a lawyer qualified in the subject of grants, many individuals and businesses who enjoy having free grants money, don't fully realize the pitfalls involved. When I found out exactly what legal obligations I'm under after receiving $7,000 from the fed.gov. grants for women fund, I've called my accountant, and asked him to make sure that I'm administering the grant correctly. After spending almost all the money, the last thing I want is to be asked to give the money back.

Anyway, would be interesting to talk to somebody who actually was hit with the refund request. What were the reasons? How big a grant was involved? Have they been able to get some leeway?
From now on, be careful. Not always free means yours forever!
