Owning a dream home is a hope of many people and housing grants makes it possible for many people to have a new home. Housing grants are sponsored by the federal government under the Department of Housing and Urban Development. This group is also often referred to as HUD. The first place to find housing grants is through HUD because they will normally have a list of available funding and the requirements to receive this type of financial backing.

The first step of the process is to determine what type of housing grants best applies to your situation. There are several different categories for this type of funding which includes single family housing, health care facilities, multi-family housing and more. Each of the categories has different qualifications and funding requirements. Depending on the category that best fits your situation, will be the determining factor for your chances of being awarded the free money. Once you select which category best fits your needs, you can download a HUD grant kit from the Internet.

Carefully read and examine the HUD grant kit. In it you will find the types of documentation that will need to be submitted with the application. You will also receive the contact person name, department or agency within HUD and address to submit the completed paperwork to. Do not just simply send the information to a general HUD address because your application and documents could be lost in the shuffle and never reviewed for receiving an award of the free money.

Once you have the application in hand, fill it out truthfully and completely. Do not leave blanks on the application. If something is not applicable to your situation, simply write NA in the blank to show that you have completely read the application and thought about the responses. Make a photo copy of the application and fill out the copy first. This will enable you to make changes and corrections. Once you are satisfied with all of the responses, transfer the information to the original application in black ink. You want the application to look neat and be easy to read. If your handwriting is poor have a friend or relative assist you with this part of the process.

You are now ready to send in all of the information that is needed for the application process after making a backup photocopy for yourself. Typically it takes several months for people to get a response to find out if further information is needed; if they were rejected or if they were awarded funding. If further information is needed or if you are awarded the funding from the housing grants, you will often be asked to come to a local HUD office.

Be certain to bring with you the backup photocopies of the paperwork that you sent in originally. Also, bring with you a photo identification, paycheck stub, bank record numbers, social security card and proof of current residency. You do not want to be late for your appointment and need to have everything with you that could be asked for during the meeting. If you were told to additional information was needed to process your application, make certain to have this gathered to take with you to the meeting.
