The purpose of national grants is to combine federal grants and non-profit organizations together to make the best use of funding. There are numerous non-profit organizations that sponsor funding programs for their communities. Many of these organizations are not on a national level and need assistance to be able to provide funding. The goal of the national grants is to merge the federal funding programs and these non-profit organizations. There are literally billions of dollars each year that is provided by non-profit organizations as grants to individuals and to other organizations for research, medical needs and other financial needs. Yet, it has not been until recently that the federal government has stepped in to make the burden on these organizations easier.

National grants are federal money programs that are provided nationwide. These promote the growth of non-profit organizations and also research teams. There are many national grant programs available that focus on research. The purpose of the money is to enable research teams to have all of the state of the art equipment needed to conduct the research and to publish the results. Without these types of funding programs, many types of research would not be conducted. For example, many of the space research programs and the alternative energy programs are financed through national grants. The national grants help to coordinate and organize these programs as well as keep them running efficiently to get the most use out of the funding that is available.

Another use for the national grants is to assist state and local governments with administrative costs and training. It takes a large number of people to process all the paperwork that is involved with grant application processes and then tracking grant spending once awards have been issued. Instead of organizations and agencies having to spend money within the group to cover the overhead costs of administration and training personnel the national grants helps to relieve the financial burden of this part of grant management. Organizations with limited funding are able to provide more grants and larger grants to the general public because the federal government is subsidizing the overhead costs which in turn enables the grantors more funding to give away as needed.

The entire process for writing grant proposals, submitting applications and determining what grants are appropriate for which situations requires some training and education. There are many organizations and groups that specialize in this process and offer free services to the public to help with the grant application process. Someone has to foot the bill for this type of training and education. Additionally, organizations that have grant processors have to train their personnel to know what details to look for in grant proposals and what documents to request with grant applications. To ease the burden on these organizations and to help fund grant processors, the national grants are awarded to the groups to ease the general burden. It is through this type of funding that more organizations are able to coordinate with each other to make the entire process much smoother and more efficient.
