The money is literally free because you do not have to pay it back to the government once it has been awarded to you. You can get free money to purchase a home, help take care of a family member in the home, buy medical supplies, start a new business or even make home improvements. In order to receive US government grants for your financial needs there are several things that you need to do for the process.

The first step in receiving US government grants is to locate the grants that you qualify for. First consider what specific need you would like to have met. For example, if you are considering purchasing a new home you would check with the Housing of Urban Development agency in your area for US government grants. If you are continuing your education you would check with the financial aid office of the university you wish to attend for grants and scholarships available. It does not do you any good to apply for every single available grant, nor would you have that much time. When you receive the grant kit or when you review the grant information on the Internet find out what the qualifications and pre-requisites for the award money are. If none is available to download write to the grantor’s address and request a grant package be sent to you. Make a copy of all of the forms. Fill out the copied forms with all the information and do not leave any of the blanks empty. It is helpful to have all of your finance information already in one place such as bank account numbers, W-2 forms, previous tax records and payroll stubs. This will make filling out the application easier.

If the application calls for a grant proposal, sit down and really think about the project that you are requesting money for. Be specific in the goals and objectives of the project. Write out an outline of how the project will be conducted and even a time line if possible. Demonstrate through your proposal that you will meet the needs of the organization that is providing the US government grants. The neater and more detailed your application, proposal and attached documents, the better your chances of being awarded money from the US government grants.

It typically takes several months for US government grants money to be awarded. Sometimes additional information is needed for the grant processor to make a final decision. Realize that very popular US government grants will have many applicants. It is important to get your paperwork completed prior to the deadline because many times deadlines are cancelled once a certain number of applicants have sent in their paperwork. You want to have everything together but at the same time have it submitted as early as possible to increase your chances of receiving valuable funding that can solve your needs, or help worthy causes.
